Why Men Should Take Skincare Seriously

Skincare isn't vanity — it's maintenance. Your skin is your largest organ, and it takes a beating every day from UV exposure, pollution, shaving, and general wear. A basic routine takes under five minutes morning and night and will make a visible difference within weeks.

The good news: you don't need a cabinet full of products. A handful of well-chosen items is all it takes.

Understanding Your Skin Type

Before buying anything, figure out what kind of skin you have. This determines which products will work for you.

  • Normal — Balanced, not too oily or dry. Few breakouts. Most products work well.
  • Oily — Shiny appearance, prone to breakouts. Look for lightweight, non-comedogenic (non-pore-blocking) products.
  • Dry — Feels tight, may flake. Needs richer moisturisers and gentle cleansers.
  • Combination — Oily T-zone (forehead, nose, chin), dry or normal elsewhere. The most common type.
  • Sensitive — Reacts easily to products or environmental changes. Stick to fragrance-free, minimal-ingredient formulas.

The Core 3-Step Routine

Step 1: Cleanse (Morning & Night)

Use a gentle facial cleanser — not bar soap. Bar soap strips your skin of its natural oils and disrupts its pH balance. A good face wash removes dirt, excess oil, and dead skin cells without leaving your skin feeling tight. Wet your face with lukewarm water, apply the cleanser, massage for 30–60 seconds, and rinse.

Look for: gel cleansers for oily skin, cream cleansers for dry skin. Avoid anything with alcohol high on the ingredients list.

Step 2: Moisturise (Morning & Night)

Even oily skin needs moisture. When skin is dehydrated, it overproduces oil to compensate, making the problem worse. A lightweight, non-comedogenic moisturiser balances hydration without clogging pores.

Apply to slightly damp skin after cleansing to lock in hydration. At night, you can use a slightly richer formula if your skin tends to feel dry by morning.

Step 3: SPF (Every Morning, No Exceptions)

If you do one thing for your skin, make it this. UV exposure is the single biggest driver of premature ageing — fine lines, dark spots, and loss of firmness. SPF 30 is the minimum; SPF 50 is better. Many moisturisers now include SPF, which makes this step effortless.

Apply it as the last step in your morning routine, after moisturiser but before anything else.

Optional Add-Ons Worth Considering

  • Eye cream — The skin around your eyes is the thinnest on your face and shows fatigue and ageing first. A simple eye cream used at night helps.
  • Exfoliant — Use 2–3 times per week to remove dead skin and prevent ingrown hairs (especially if you shave). Choose a chemical exfoliant (AHA/BHA) over a harsh physical scrub.
  • Serum — A targeted treatment applied between cleansing and moisturising. Vitamin C serums brighten the skin; hyaluronic acid serums boost hydration. One is plenty.

A Simple Daily Schedule

MorningCleanse → Moisturise → SPF 30/50

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Skipping SPF on cloudy days (UV rays penetrate clouds)
  • Using too many new products at once — introduce them one at a time to identify what works
  • Over-washing your face — twice a day is enough for most men
  • Using hot water — it strips the skin; lukewarm is always better
  • Ignoring your neck — it ages just as fast as your face

Start Small, Stay Consistent

The best skincare routine is the one you'll actually stick to. Start with just the core three steps — cleanser, moisturiser, SPF — for a month. Consistency always outperforms complexity.
